Lessons learned from this piece: apparently everyone’s mom loves hedgehogs.
As I posted in-progress photos of this painting on good-ole instagram, most of the comments I received were along the lines of:
“My mom loved hedgehogs!”
“So does mine!”
“I’m a mom and I love hedgehogs!”
I started on this little painting unsure of how it would all come together. But as I swirled the paint across the paper, a plan unfolded. Some fuzzy dandelions appeared in the background, and a floating grassy plot appeared beneath them. More yellow dandelions found their way in, and to finish, sweet little dots to add a bit of magic.
The original painting was painted in gouache. Gouache is basically opaque watercolor, meaning it is water-soluble, but not transparent. Layering it can be a bit tricky because things tend to blend in once the pigments get wet again. You can get a little peek at the process in this video.
