Clarice: A Dog Portrait

Clarice - A Dog Portrait

I had so much fun working on this dog portrait painting.

Clarice is a rescue dog. She was adopted by a super sweet couple over on the east coast. And yes, she’s named after Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs. She looks a bit on the serious side, but she seems to enjoy playing dress up from time to time.

Clarice’s mom thought a dog portrait would be a lovely gift for her husband (and thankfully she gets to enjoy it as well!). We worked together to find the best photo to work from. After getting more information about the color palette in their home, we decided to change the dog bed from a beige color to a bright marigold. I’m pretty smitten with the bright colors.

This oil painting measures 18″ x 24″ and is on linen.

Different Stages

Here’s a glimpse into my process… I began with the basics and added a pop of color towards the end.

The Details

Some closeups… I’m really pleased with that dog paw.
